Workshop level: Intermediate Workshop Description: Aging and Long-Term Care: There is significant growth in the senior population; aging is accompanied by a multitude of life changes and the emergence of a number of neuropsychiatric disorders. Topics include: understanding normal facets of aging, differential diagnosis of depression and dementia, complicated bereavement, psychological and psychopharmacologic treatments for geriatric clients, fostering continued growth of the self in later life, legal and ethical issues, social and spiritual aspects of aging. This workshop satisfies the licensing requirement for the three hour aging and long-term care course: BBS and Board of Psychology Objectives: 1. Differentiate between adaptive adjustment to significant life stressors and normal, age-related cognitive changes versus psychopathology and neurologic disorders in geriatric populations 2. Understand the role of medications for the treatment of dementing illnesses and psychiatric disorders, with special considerations for the use of psychotropic medications in elderly clients 3. Become familiar with resources that can help seniors and their families access appropriate health care and social services. 4. Explore the interface of psychotherapy and spirituality, especially as one faces multiple losses and one’s own mortality. 5.
