Course Description: Many psychiatric disorders are either caused by or result in neurobiological changes that create tremendous human suffering and complicate treatment. This workshop explores in detail the neurobiology of anxiety and depressive disorders and focuses on treatment implications. Additional topics include: the role of severe stress in altering brain functioning, the lasting impact of severe child abuse and neglect, and non-pharmacologic ways to alter brain functioning and thus reduce symptoms: exercise, sleep enhancement, diet, bright light therapy, chronotherapy (stabilizing biological clocks), and the growing body of research on how psychotherapy alters brain functioning.
The course covers theoretical issues, but also offers a number of concrete, practical approaches to enhance outcomes in therapy.
