Clinical Portraits of Bullies, the Bullied & Gang Affiliated Youth

Course Overview
Incorporating the established successful format of combining nationally recognized expert speakers with local expert presenters, this years symposium will expand the participants knowledge base as well as provide useful insights into strategies and interventions on issues confronting young people.
The day’s 6 hour program will be divided into a morning session and an afternoon session. The morning sessions focus will be bullying. The afternoon session will be devoted to gang affiliated youth. Both sessions will have an opportunity for questions and answers.
Cost
An early registration fee of $50 for registration before February 15, 2011 and $65 dollars after that date is required to attend this event, which includes lunch.
Course Objectives
Bullying
• Identify the differences among several key forms of bullying
• Describe how children learn to bully others
• Recognize the three faces of bullying – the bully, the victim and the bystander
• List three ways that bystanders often contribute to bullying and three ways that they can help to prevent bullying
• Implement several promising and exemplary research- based interventions to prevent or stop bullying
• Consider local issues, including bullying and the LGBT community
• Identify strategies and activities that are currently in place to address the bullying activities in local schools

• Cite how researchers and law enforcement define gangs and gang members
• Describe the scope and nature of gang participation
• Identify the characteristics of youth who join gangs (i.e., risk factors)
• Describe gang involvement in crime
