UNDERSTANDING PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY: The Basics and Beyond Print

Course Outline/Schedule (6 CE hours*)

  • Introduction: neurobiology, basic pharmacology:   one-half hour
    (note: each clinical section will address diagnostic issues, theories of biologic etiology, psychotropic medication treatment: effects, side effects, etc. and interface with psychotherapy)
  • Mood Disorders : two hours
  • Anxiety Disorders : two hours
  • Miscellaneous Disorders: OCD, PTSD, severe personality disorders, pre-menstrual dysphoria, Attention Deficit Disorder.  Also:over-the-counter products and experimental treatments: one and one-half hours

Description of Course

This course is designed for licensed therapists who have a good deal of clinical experience. The workshop addresses the following: 1) up-date on new developments in psychopharmacology including controversial issues (e.g. increased suicidality in young people treated with antidepressants), 2) specifics on medical treatment of common psychiatric disorders (empirically derived treatment algorithms), and 3) how to more effectively interact and collaborate with primary care physicians and psychiatrists in the treatment of psychiatric disorders.

Course Goals and Objectives
  • Develop better skills related to diagnosing psychiatric disorders
  • Know which disorders are considered to be medication responsive
  • Underrstand empirically-derived treatment guidelines
  • Appreciate the limitations of psychopharmacology
  • Effectively collaborate with psychiatrists and primary care physicians

Bio-Sketch
John Preston, Psy.D., ABPP is professor emeritus with Alliant International University’s California School of Professional Psychology, Sacramento. He is the author of twenty-one books, five of which are psychopharmacology texts. He is also the author of Psychiatric Medication Treatment  chapter in the Encyclopedia Americana. During the past 25 years Dr. Preston has presented over 500 continuing education workshops in the United States, Canada, Europe, Africa and Russia.
