The Monterey Bay Psychological Association & SC CAMFT Present The Power of Story and Metaphor in Psychotherapy: Therapy as Art A workshop featuring local Psychologist Jon Girvetz, Ph.D.
This course has been approved for 4 CE credits for Psychologists, MFTs and LCSWs*
This is a workshop of both presentation and performance, highlighting the use of story telling and metaphor in therapy. The use of stories in therapy, made famous by Milton Ericson, will have new twists and turns with some magic thrown in as well. Jon will share some of the stories that he uses with children, teens as well as with adults, and demonstrate the use of metaphors and metaphorical props as well. Participants will learn: The function of story and metaphor including, How to use stories to help develop a therapeutic alliance. How to cut through defenses and resistance with stories. How to de-pathologize and normalize with the use of stories. How to develop models and therapeutic language using stories and metaphor. How to encourage self exploration with the use of stories. How to use stories to open up difficult or touchy subjects. How to integrate the use of stories and metaphors in therapy The structure of stories. How to develop your own stories. How to effectively tell stories. Using magic to make a point.
Please bring a story of your own, as there will be some time for a story “swap” and analysis.
Jon Girvetz, Ph.D. is a licensed Psychologist who has worked in Santa Cruz for close to 30 years. He has worked in schools, childcare agencies and in private practice. His Specialty is working with children, teens and families, though works with adults as well. The use of story telling and metaphors has always been central tools in his clinical practice, integrating this with other clinical approaches. Though recognizing the importance of the science behind therapy, his passion remains focused on therapy as an art.
